Doubled-edged sword: The power of the Word - Genesis 17:3
Doubled-edged sword: The power of the Word - Genesis 17:3

Genesis 17:3

“When Abraham prostrated himself, God continued to speak to him: 'My covenant with you is this: you are to e the father of a host of nations'” (Gen. 17:3).

Within decades of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, the good news had spread from Jerusalem through the Hellenistic culture of the eastern Mediterranean to Rome, and to ends-of-earth places such as India and the British Isles. In the following centuries, holy men and women protected the heritage of Western civilization in monasteries and convents, and then re-evangelized the barbarian-conquered West, thereby helping to create a new entity known as Europe. Over the next two millennia, Christianity built much of what we take for granted in civilization today: universities, economics, a belief in human rights, and the dignity of all persons.

Certainly, the house of modern civilization was built on the foundations of Christianity. But is a strong civilization all the Gospel offers? The Gospel is indeed a civilizing force, but certainly it promised more than simply to make us all civil. After all, to what end is civilization?

Civilization is important, but Western civilization especially so, for it contains within it a reminder of the point of civilization: the pursuit of God in Christ. When God promised Abraham he would be the father of many nations, it is safe to say He did not have in mind traditions of learning and culture, great works of architecture, or international economic systems. Rather, this covenant was based on munion of all people with their Creator. And yet, civilization and “divinization” move in the same direction:toward the proper ordering and development of the human person. A true and solid civilization in this world will encourage, assist, and allow persons to pursue their proper ends, which ultimately are not of this world. It is in this sense that philosopher Jacques Maritain can say that “to civilize is to spiritualize.”

And so the nation that would spring from the faith of Abraham would also serve as a springboard for the salvation of all nations. Christ's salvific work, from one nation and for all nations, means that all nations might e more fully themselves, just as it means all persons might e more fully themselves. And in the end, “a great multitude … of every nation, race, people, and tongue” will cry out in a loud voice, es from our God” (Rev. 7:9-10).

American Counterrevolution
If one wishes to avoid the horrors of a revolution, one must will it and make it oneself.” – Antoine deRivarol The term revolution is one of the most mystified concepts in the modern conceptual lexicon and also one of the most fundamental. The word was originally an astronomical term designating the regular motion of celestial bodies that acquired intellectual...
Dunes Moral Unseriousness
I have written about Denis Villeneuve for some years now, remarking that no other director is given so much money to waste on beautiful spectacles. This might do us honor. Villeneuve is the favored artist of the digital/AI era (Blade Runner 2049 could be a computer game) and yet he cannot make his studios a profit on his blockbusters. Everyone...

Vietnam’s New Religious Decree Further Burdens Local Churches
Operating a church in Vietnam just became even more difficult thanks to new government regulations that went into effect over the weekend. Under Decree 95, the government will now require religious groups to submit financial records and allow local government officials to suspend religious activities for unspecified serious violations. Nguyen Ti Dinh of Vietnams religious affairs committee said the guidelines...
God Knows How Much
Weekend, April 6, 2024 God Knows How Much Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. Israel’s Transformative Tragedies
Personal tragedies transform individuals and families. National tragedies transform nations and international systems. Britain was never the same country, nor the same empire, after the Battle of the Somme came to a grim close in November 1916. Across the Atlantic, eighty-five years later, America’s post-Cold War luxury vacation from history ended abruptly on the morning of September 11, 2001. On...
Affirm NATO’s High Performers
This month marks 75 years since the founding of the NATO alliance. A Victorian Frankenstein
In his 1889–90 fictional portrait of aspiring Victorian artists grasping for success, Henry James observed that novels of the age were “large, loose, baggy monsters, with their queer elements of the accidental and the arbitrary.” Science, technology, and imperial expansion encouraged Enlightenment thinkers and popular broadsides to rhapsodize about the steady march of “progress” and the supposedly rational, modern subjects...
When Influential Trouble Comes in Waves
When Influential Trouble Comes in Waves By Meg Bucher “Troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray.” - Deuteronomy 13:13 NIV Much like hard times come in seasons, trouble comes in waves. The tricky part about determining a bad influence is weeding out our assumptions.
