Samuel Gregg: Please put Tocqueville, Maritain on reading list, Mr. President
May 17, 2025 3:13 PM

National Review Online asked Acton Research Director Samuel Gregg to weigh in on President Barack Obama’s second term inaugural address.

Gregg points to “our president’s worldview that the government is the primary way in which we address mon problems and realize our responsibilities and obligations to each other as citizens and as human beings.” He wonders if it has occurred to Obama that “many such responsibilities and obligations might be realized outside the realm of politics … ”

Gregg goes on to suggest, for the presidential reading list, Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America and Jacques Maritain’s writings on civil society in the United States.

Read “Why Barack Obama Needs to Read Alexis de Tocqueville” by Samuel Gregg on NRO.

Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Acts 1:6-11 (Read Acts 1:6-11) They were earnest in asking about that which their Master never had directed or encouraged them to seek. Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Psalm 62:1-7 (Read Psalm 62:1-7) We are in the way both of duty and comfort, when our souls wait upon God; when we cheerfully give up ourselves, and all our affairs, to his will and wisdom; when we leave ourselves to all the ways of his providence, and patiently expect the event, with full...

Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Hebrews 11:1-3 (Read Hebrews 11:1-3) Faith always has been the mark of God's servants, from the beginning of the world.
