Double-edged sword: The power of the Word - John 6:40
Double-edged sword: The power of the Word - John 6:40
Feb 12, 2026 6:34 AM

For My Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

The sixth chapter of John is one of the most familiar passages in the New Testament. It starts with Christ feeding the 5,000 and includes one of the seven "I am" statements. Christ declares, "I am the bread of life," es to feed the multitude (John 6:35). The chapter concludes with many disciples deserting Him. The declarations of Christ and his teaching proved too difficult for many, just as it does today.

John 6:40 is one of the most important passages in the New Testament. The verse has proven to be an essential evangelistic message preached throughout the world. It's a simple statement about the will of the Father, our salvation, and our eternal purpose in Christ.

Many of us have periods of struggle with faith, belief in the Bible, and our eternal destiny after this life. We often rebel or reject the Word of God. The Lord knows this and has planned for humanity's problem and disobedience. Jesus is simply saying that God, our Father, wants his children back. This is reflected wonderfully in the parable of the Prodigal or Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32). Though we have strayed or fallen away from Him, His eternal purpose is to reclaim us. Christ wasn't a backup plan to get us back to the Father, but the eternal plan to join us in fellowship with the Triune God. forting to know that from all eternity there was a plan to keep us united to and with God.

There are a lot of people in the world and even within the Church that think God wants to punish them, but Christ is declaring that God is throwing the doors of Heaven open to those who believe in the Son. The amazing thing about Christ is that he is not relaying this message as something he was told by a messenger or something he read, but he is Himself from Heaven.

Another one of Christ's "I am" statements is when He declares that He is the "resurrection and the life" (John 11:25). As creator and sustainer, He has the power to give life and raise the dead. The resurrection is not just an event but it's a person. Christ has already raised us up with Him. He has clothed Himself in our humanity and united Himself to us. At our death, He promises to raise us up physically, so we can be eternally included in the life of the Triune God. John 6:40 is wonderful news, and it's a great verse to return to and meditate upon when we experience fear or doubt. Never forget, it is simply the will of the Father to be with us.

The Return of the Common Law?
The consensus among legal scholars and media observers is that we have at last arrived at the triumph of “originalism” in our jurisprudence, the culmination of a legal counter-revolution decades in the making. But there seem to be as many versions or shadings of originalism as there are flavors at Baskin-Robbins. Even when the conservative originalist justices of the Supreme...

Holding on When You Want to Give Up By Alexis A. Goring Bible Reading “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” - 1 Timothy 6:12 NIV Life can be tough for everyone. Doubt? Or Unbelief?
Weekend, September 7, 2024 Doubt? Or Unbelief? Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see. (Matthew 12:22 NLT) Instead of praising God for an incredible miracle, the Pharisees attributed it to the devil. Jesus had just healed a demon-possessed man who had...
A Culture of Immediacy
In the last lines of Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville says that in writing the book, “I did not mean either to serve or to contest any party; I undertook to see, not differently, but further than the parties; and while they are occupied with the next day, I wanted to ponder the future.” Seeing further than the prevailing...
You Are Called to Encourage Your Spouse
You Are Called to Encourage Your Spouse By: Kia Stephens Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. - 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Sometimes, it is easier to encourage people when they are of no relation to us. We can easily encourage a friend on the phone or a random stranger but when it comes...
In the Room Where It Happened
If there were a contest to pick the best-connected conservative in the Anglosphere, John O’Sullivan would win easily. He was, for a time, Margaret Thatcher’s speechwriter. He edited National Review for almost a decade. Conrad Black sought him out to help found and edit Toronto’s National Post newspaper. He held senior editorial positions on both the London Times and the...
Love Does
Love Does Weekly Overview: James 2:26 tells us, “Faith apart from works is dead.”If we are going to experience the fullness of life offered to us through our faith we must be those who put our words into action. We must not profess to love God on Sundays and live as if he isn’t present, real, or good on Monday....
When Bitterness Creeps In

America’s King
This year election day in America falls on the 5th of November, a date innocuous for us, but auspicious for our British cousins (who themselves just held a consequential election on our hallowed July 4). On that day in 1605, a Catholic plot to blow up the House of Lords—with King James I in it—was happily foiled. The conspirators, including...
Dereliction and Daring on United 93
It seems inevitable that with every passing year, we give less thought to 9/11. It’s not clear that there is anything new to say and the silent artillery of time must gradually do its work. Although the event was on TV and the live coverage is still easily available, we do not wish to relive it. It’s not exactly that...
