Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal is the same old socialist hooey
Jul 3, 2026 3:14 PM

Official Washington is all atwitter today over the release of the “Green New Deal” by New York freshman Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, also a Democrat. The proposal bundles many long-desired goals of the environmentalist movement into a neat legislative package, described by left-leaning Vox in this way:

The resolution consists of a preamble, five goals, 14 projects, and 15 requirements. The preamble establishes that there are two crises, a climate crisis and an economic crisis of wage stagnation and growing inequality, and that the GND can address both.

The goals — achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, creating jobs, providing for a just transition, securing clean air and water — are broadly popular. The projects — things like decarbonizing electricity, transportation, and industry, restoring ecosystems, upgrading buildings and electricity grids — are necessary and sensible (if also extremely ambitious).

NPR describes the plan as “massively ambitious“, with the Wall Street Journal aptly noting that “Soviet five-year plans were more modest.” One wonders if the “extreme ambition” of the plan might have some impact on the supposed “sensibility” of the proposal, but keep in mind that the world is going to end in, like, 12 years if we don’t do something!!!

Perhaps you feel like you’ve heard all this before (andyou have). But here in these United States we have reason to be thankful! Invariably, whenever such a crisis arises, there are politicians who spring into action, ready to conjure up yet another group of bureaucrats who will set about the important work of regulating and rule-making and fee collecting and budget-chewing, which is of course how all problems get solved. Naturally, this will require all of us to sacrifice a bit of our money, and maybe a bit of our liberty. But it’s TOTALLY going to give us super clean energy, and everybody will get a job, and to top it all off, we’re also going to finally get all that economic, social and racial justice we’ve all wanted for so long!

In summary: The world is going to end unless you let a group of politicians take control over significant portions of the economy and do a bunch of stuff that—coincidentally, I’m sure—they’ve always wanted to do but never seem to be able to get the broad public to agree to. And if you let them do it, not only will they stop the world from ending, but they’ll solve a bunch of other problems to boot!

To be honest, I have my doubts about the honesty and motives of the people pushing this plan. Back in 2006, we sat down with Fred Smith from the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and he reminded us that fearmongering is a potent tool for politicians and groups looking to acquire power. I think we’d do well to heed his words today.

In the video below, Representative Ocasio-Cortez lays out just how little time we have left to act!

UPDATE:“The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it right?”

Commentary on Today's Verse Chapter Contents This psalm begins with expressions of devotion, which may be applied to Christ; but ends with such confidence of a resurrection, as must be applied to Christ, and to him only. David flees to God's protection, with cheerful, believing confidence. Those who have avowed that the Lord is their Lord, should often put themselves...

Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Romans 12:17-21 (Read Romans 12:17-21) Since men became enemies to God, they have been very ready to be enemies one to another. And those that embrace religion, must expect to meet with enemies in a world whose smiles seldom agree with Christ's. Recompense to no man evil for evil. That is a brutish recompence,...

Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on James 2:1-13 (Read James 2:1-13) Those who profess faith in Christ as the Lord of glory, must not respect persons on account of mere outward circumstances and appearances, in a manner not agreeing with their profession of being disciples of the lowly Jesus. St. James does not here encourage rudeness or disorder: civil respect...

Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Luke 10:25-37 (Read Luke 10:25-37) If we speak of eternal life, and the way to it, in a careless manner, we take the name of God in vain. No one will ever love God and his neighbour with any measure of pure, spiritual love, who is not made a partaker of converting grace. But...

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 In-Context 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. 24 Do you not know that in a race...

Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Mark 8:34-38 (Read Mark 8:34-38) Frequent notice is taken of the great flocking there was to Christ for help in various cases. All are concerned to know this, if they expect him to heal their souls. They must not indulge the ease of the body. As the happiness of heaven with Christ, is enough...

Colossians 3:12-14 In-Context 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with...

Commentary on Today's Verse Commentary on Proverbs 10:14 (Read Proverbs 10:14) Whatever knowledge may be useful, we must lay it up, that it may not be to seek when we want it. The wise gain this wisdom by reading, by hearing the word, by meditation, by prayer, by faith in Christ, who is made of God unto us wisdom. Proverbs...
