U.S. Southern Borders Overwhelmed By Children
U.S. Southern Borders Overwhelmed By Children
Jan 29, 2026 6:06 PM

It has long been apparent that U.S. borders are far from secure. Border patrol agents are stretched thin, especially along the southern states, dealing with illegal immigrants, human traffickers and smugglers, and the drug cartels. Now, there is a new problem with no easy solution: children teeming into the U.S., many under the age of 12. According to The Washington Times,

The flood of young children pouring across the southwestern border is worse than the administration has previously acknowledged, and efforts to deal with panied minors are overwhelming the Border Patrol, distracting it from going after smugglers and other illegal immigrants, according to an internal draft memo from the agency.

The four-page memo, authored by Deputy Border Patrol Chief Ronald D. Vitiello and dated May 30, contradicts the administration’s argument that the border is secure enough to begin legalizing current illegal aliens already in the U.S.

According to estimates in the memo, about 90,000 children have been apprehended by law enforcement so far in 2014, up from 40,000 in 2013. Of course, these numbers are only the children that were apprehended; there were no estimates for how many panied minors actually crossed the border. The children ing from Mexico and Central America and cite poverty and violence as the reason they are seeking life in the U.S. The journey is exceedingly dangerous, especially for girls, who face sexual assault at a much higher rate than boys.

Breitbart News received leaked photos of processing centers in Texas, showing children “warehoused” in overcrowded conditions.

Breitbart Texas Border Expert and Contributing Editor Sylvia Longmire reviewed the photos.

“Given the deteriorating security and economic conditions in the Central American countries where most of these children and adult immigrants came from, it’s hard to understand how DHS didn’t see ing,” Longmire said. “The trend towards increased cross-border movement towards south Texas and away from Arizona has been apparent; the trend of Central Americans starting to outnumber Mexican crossers has been apparent. Even worse is believing that DHS knew this ing, but didn’t have the resources or ability to cut through bureaucratic red tape to prepare more quickly.

“Now the results of this mismanagement are thousands of individuals living in inhumane conditions for an indeterminate period of time, as well as exhausted and overwhelmed Border Patrol agents and CBP detention facilities,” Longmire continued. “The Obama administration’s band-aid fix has been to ship a good portion of these immigrants — many of whom are weak, emotionally vulnerable, sick, and confused — to other sectors as far as San Diego county in California and release them with no obligation other than to show up for a hearing in 15 days.

Longmire said this situation highlighted the terrible blight of poverty and violence in Mexico and Central America, and was “a humiliating example” of the failure of U.S. border security policies and planning.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), which manages the largest re-settlement program (Migration and Refugee Services or MRS) in the world has a program for panied minors. They seek to place children in foster care through the network of Catholic Charities across the country, along with managing advocacy programs that address the unique needs of these children. Often, these children face post-traumatic stress disorder, drug abuse issues, malnutrition, depression and other health issues. It is mon that the children have little or no formal education. The handbook outlining the principles of this program states:

USCCB/MRS policy and program initiatives particularly focus on the protection needs of panied displaced children. We specialize in the intersection between migration and child permanency, international protection, and integration. We build the capacity of agencies nationally and internationally to respond to the emerging needs of refugees, undocumented migrants, asylum seekers, victims of trafficking, and other vulnerable migrating populations.

For more than thirty years, the URM program has assisted children and youth in need of third country resettlement as well as those in mixed migration flows in need of protection. We value the role the program has played in the lives of thousands of children and youth.

At this point, officials say they have no way to stop the flow of panied children into the U.S. other than reaching out to the countries of origin for these children. Obviously, this isn’t working for anyone, least of all the children.

Ross Douthat and the Value of Traditional Christianity for America
In his new book, Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics, New York Times columnist Ross Douthat explores the present decline—economic recession, a divisive, stagnant political climate and a deteriorating moral structure—of American civilization. Rather than citing religious excess or wide scale secularization as the problem, Douthat points his finger at what he calls “bad religion,” or, four basic heresies that present faux-Gospels contrary to the Christian faith. Douthat’s solution, presented in the book’s es in the form...
Video: The False Promise of Green Energy
For PowerBlog readers, we’re posting the video from Andrew Morriss’ April 26 Acton Lecture Series talk in Grand Rapids, Mich., on “The False Promise of Green Energy.” Here’s the lecture description: “Green energy advocates claim that transforming America to an economy based on wind, solar, and biofuels will produce jobs for Americans, benefits for the environment, and restore American industry. Prof. Andrew Morriss, co-author of The False Promise of Green Energy (Cato, 2011), shows that these claims are based on...
The Moral Case for Capitalism
The philosophical demise of socialism has caused many on the economic left to change plaint about free-market capitalism. While it may be effective, they now say, es at the cost of human goods munity and social solidarity. Such claims are monplace in policy debates. But are they true? James R. Otteson explains why such criticism are not as strong as some people might think: munity. Capitalism gives us incentives to trade and associate with people outside our munity, plete strangers,...
The Perils of Pedocracy
Portrait of a Child Prince, Wikimedia Commons “Anyone concerned with the future,” wrote Sergius Bulgakov, is most anxious about the younger generation. But to be spiritually dependent on it, to truckle to its opinions and take it as a standard, testifies to a society’s spiritual weakness. In any case, an entire historical period and the whole spiritual tenor of intelligentsia heroism are symbolized by the fact that the ideal of the Christian saint, the ascetic, has been replaced here by...

How Climate Change Panic Leads to Forced Sterilizations and Death in India
When es to the issue of anthropomorphic climate change, I tend to be “acognostic”—I’m not convinced we even have the cognitive ability to determine whether climate change is occurring, much less whether it can be attributed to human activity. But I have no doubt that the responses to perceived climate change have already been disastrous for humanity. Take, for example, the British government’s use of climate change as an excuse for population control. In 2010, a working paper published by...
From Christian Giving to the Welfare State in the Netherlands
I recently came across an interesting academic journal, Diaconia: Journal for the Study of Christian Social Practice. One of the sample articles available is by Herman Noordegraaf of the Protestant Theological University in Leiden. His piece is titled, “Aid Under Protest? Churches in the Netherlands and Material Aid to the Poor” (PDF). The latest issue of the Journal of Markets & Morality is a theme issue on “Modern Christian Social Thought,” and a series of pieces take up a line...
The Soul of Liberty
Calls for freedom, democracy, and secularism end up with “none of the above,” says Hunter Baker: You can find a lot of interesting things on Twitter packaged in pithy statements of no more than 140 characters each. Some of you may recall that in the aftermath of the 2009 election in Iran, a number of protesters claimed that the government had tampered with the results to stay in power. Twitter was a key channel they used both to express their...
