Only an EU ‘empire’ can secure liberty: EU leader
Only an EU ‘empire’ can secure liberty: EU leader
Feb 11, 2026 7:04 AM

Is a European-wide patible with liberty? A prominent EU leader mended transforming the European Union into an “empire” at a UK political party conference this weekend, to sustained applause.

“The world order of tomorrow … is a world order based on empires,” said Guy Verhofstadt, a Member of European Parliament (MEP) and the EU’s chief negotiator on Brexit. He is also leader of the EU’s Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe faction.

ments came at the party conference of the Liberal Democrats, a pro-Remain party with 18 Members of Parliament.

Verhofstadt told the Lib Dems:

The world order of tomorrow is not a world order based on nation states or countries. It’s a world order that is based on empires.

Chinais not a nation; it’s a civilization.

India, you know it better than I do, is not a nation. There are 2,000 nations in India. There are 20 different languages that are used there. There are four big religions at the same time, and its 2011 census recorded five regions with more than five million inhabitants. It is the biggest democracy worldwide.

TheU.S.is also an empire, more than a nation. Maybe tomorrow they will speak more Spanish than English; I don’t know what will happen.

And then finally, theRussian Federation.

The world of tomorrow is a world of empires, in which we Europeans and you British can only defend your interests, your way of life, by doing it together in a European framework and a European Union.

Although this ments made news due to their audience and reception, the former prime minister of Belgium has used identical language for years, with increased urgency.

EU leaders envision a continental imperium

In a speech on April 29, in Maastricht, Verhofstadt used nearly identical language and closed by calling for “a new Europe in a new world.” A few days later, he added:

In a world increasingly dominated by empires, the next five years will be crucial to turn our Union into a real Union, with increased unity and ambitious policies for all Europeans. The clock is ticking – it’s now or never! #RenewEurope #FlorenceDebate /3qG4dOm8mA

Verhofstadt responded to the election of Donald Trump by proposing, “Let’s create a European defense union. Let’s take on our responsibilities. … Let’s e an empire.” However, he promised this would be “an empire of the good and not of the bad.”

His imperial ambitions link with those of such Europhilesas Bruno Le Maire, Emmanuel Macron’s finance minister, who told the German business newspaperHandelsblatt, “Europe needs to e a kind of empire like China and the USA. … Europe can no longer afford to shrink from exercising its power and being an empire of peace.”

EU officials have proclaimed the political union in Brussels an empire-in-waiting for more than a decade. José Manuel Barroso, then the president of the European Commission, said, “Sometimes I like pare the EU as a creation to the organization of empire. We have the dimension of empire.” He clarified the EU is “the first non-imperial empire,” since its 27 members opted “to pool their sovereignty.”

Statements of this variety fueled early calls for a UK referendum on EU membership. Mark Francois, then-Conservative shadow minister for Europe, responded to Barosso by saying, “The British public will be genuinely surprised to hear the suggestion that we are now part of an EU empire.” He added, “Anyone who thinks that we have been exaggerating in calling for a referendum on a revived constitution only has to look at what Mr. Barroso has said to realize the scale of what is now being contemplated.”

The Brexit vote, the largest vote in UK prehensively rejected EU leaders’ starry-eyed visions of a continental imperium.

“Liberty consists in the divison of power” – Lord Acton

A secularist, supranational government based in Brussels would be inimical to people of faith. Robert F. Gorman wrote in a 2016 Acton publication on global governance that under the “mantle of peace, justice, human rights and humanitarian advocacy – the social gospel of the Church” – global bureaucrats “have systematically attacked the Church as an institution, the traditional family and traditional moral values,” including the freedom of conscience. For instance, last year the EU’s highest legal authority, the European Court of Justice, ruled that secular officials can punish churches for refusing to employ atheists.

Aside from the content of their rulings, empires are artificial entities without a shared history, language, culture, or morality. They ignore national particularity. Their leaders’ remote location and broad constituency make it virtually impossible mon citizens to make their voices heard. The wealthiest international corporations hold greater influence over politicians, and EU fundsconstitute “the largest source of corruption for Central and Eastern Europe.”

Empires cannot reflect the views of a local demos. Instead, they impose a one-size-fits-all solution on vast swaths of the territory. For instance, Verhofstadt called for replacing the EU’s decision-making “based on unanimity” with the “majority ruling”in his 2017 book Europe’s Last Chance. This reduces citizens’ satisfaction with their government and economic efficiency and dynamism.

As Lord Acton said, “Liberty consists in the division of power. Absolutism, in concentration of power.”

Affirmative Action Limits Opportunities For Asian Americans
One of the realities of using race to socially engineer the racial make-up of college freshman classes by elite decision-makers, is that it does nothing but perpetuate the injustice of institutional and planned discrimination. This is the greatest irony of affirmative action education policy. The attempt to redress past injustices does nothing but set the stage for new forms of injustice against other groups. Today, Asian-American high-school students are faced with the reality that, if they are high achievers, top...
Sebelius Asks Health Care Industry For ‘Donations’ To Prop Up Obamacare
While the Obama administration is busy dealing with the IRS scandal, the Benghazi scandal and the seizure of reporters’ phone records, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is skirting around a problem as well. Sebelius has been asking for donations for Obamacare costs from the very people and industry who will be charged with implementing it and getting government money to do so. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has gone, hat in hand, to health industry officials, asking them to...
German Homeschoolers Denied Asylum in U.S.
On Tuesday, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals said that Uwe and Hannelore Romeike along with their children were not persecuted by the German government and will not be granted asylum in the United States. According to the Religion News Service, the Romeikes wanted to home school their children, fearing public education would discourage “Christian values.” The German government levied thousands of dollars of fines on the family and threatened to take away their children. The Romeikes fled Germany and...
Black America, ‘We’ve got no time for excuses’
President Obama, on Sunday, delivered a touching mencement address at Morehouse College, an all-male historically black college that is also the alma mater of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, that will likely bother many progressives. NPR captured these important sections: We know that too many young men in munity continue to make bad choices. Growing up, I made a few myself. And I have to confess, sometimes I wrote off my own failings as just another example of...
Sisters’ Proxy Resolutions Dilute Catholic ‘Brand’
Standing up for religious principles in an increasingly secularized and politicized country has e extremely difficult for religious and clergy. It doesn’t help their spiritual causes when these very same religious and clergy cannot delineate between what their respective faiths teach and what is simply the desire to attain a political or economic result. For example, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, a member of the Interfaith Counsel on Corporate Responsibility, have issued a shareholder proxy resolution to Walgreens...
IRS Asked Pro-Life Group About Content of Public Prayers
IRS agents appear to need a refresher course on First Amendment freedoms. While applying for tax-exempt status in 2009, an Iowa-based pro-life group was asked by the agency to provide information about its members’ prayer meetings: On June 22, 2009, the Coalition for Life of Iowa received a letter from the IRS office in Cincinnati, Ohio, that oversees tax exemptions requesting details about how often members pray and whether their prayers are “considered educational.” “Please explain how all of your...
‘Buy Yourself a Cup of Tea’ — A Collapse in Culture
The Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh on April 24th killed 1,127 people, including almost 300 whose bodies have not yet been identified. In the article, “Buy Yourself a Cup of Tea” — A Collapse in Culture”, PovertyCure’s Mark Weber highlights plex and deeply-rooted problem within Bangladeshi culture that has contributed to numerous disasters like this: corruption. The reversal of this pattern requires mitment much stronger than any government regulation can provide, he maintains. He says, Corruption disguises what...
What capitalists can learn from Pope Francis
In a May 16 address to four new Vatican ambassadors, Pope Francis denounced the “cult of money” in today’s culture, stating that we are now living in a disposable society, where even human beings are cast aside. Phil Lawler, at CatholicCulture.org asks if this means the pope is a socialist. Not so: Socialists make their arguments in moral terms, because if the argument is stated purely in practical terms, the socialists will lose. By the same logic, capitalists prefer to...
Should We Be Eating More Bugs?
Our planet contains about forty tons of bugs for every human, says Helena Goodrich, offering and “ongoing ‘all you can eat” insect buffet.” While snacking on cicadas probably won’t catch on in the U.S. anytime soon, could eating more bugs help solve world hunger? According to a recent U.N. report, insects could indeed be part of the solution to some of the world’s food security and health problems. More than 1,900 species have reportedly been used as food and insects...
Education Choice Helps Minorities
Sometimes parents in e areas get a bad rap. Many are thought to be negligent and uncaring about their children’s education and futures. While that may be true in some extraordinary cases, you will rarely ever meet a parent who wants to enroll their child in a low-performing school. In fact, research suggests that when parents are given free choice about where to place their children in school, they will choose the best school they can find. The positive es...
